 Kathy Smith's Kickboxing Workout

 Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Veteran aerobics instructor Kathy Smith jumps aboard the Tae-Bo bandwagon with her punchy video Kickboxing Workout and adds her own brand of California-girl pep to the popular martial-arts routine. Accompanied by martial-arts champ Keith Cooke, Smith presents a terrific, high-adrenaline workout, based on the punches, jabs, kicks, and squats that Tae-Bo lovers will recognize, with more polished production values and a more appealing music track. Smith and Cooke alternate leading the onscreen group and point out several low-impact alternative moves for beginners. The 45-minute workout is a great fat-burner, and those side kicks will shape those hips in no time. --Anne Hurley

Great Calorie Burner! Fast Heart Pumping!, January 11, 2001
Reviewer: Lisa from Boston Massachusetts

This was my first Kathy Smith tape and I'm glad I bought this one first. I have rented her earlier workouts from the library and glad I own this one. She is down to earth, motivating and the others in her 'boxing class' are cool role models. Keith is cool but the red hair (Australian?) lady gets a turn to work you out and it's a cool variation. I really like the techno beat music and the photography is good because you can see their whole body. Not like in other videos where you are supposed to be jumping but you can't follow the teachers feet. Kathy instructs the poses well but doesn't waste good calorie burning time because you are always moving or in this video 'boxer shuffling' I like to do this video before going to the office, it's a quick sweat making workout that doesn't waste my time with all the fluffy crap. The warm up (really does get you warm & hot) is 10 min., the workout is 25 min of nonstop shuffling, punching and kicking, then another 10 min of buns workout doing chair lunges and slow motion side leg extensions, burns the leg and hips! There is also a bonus of abs workout, sometimes if I'm in a hurry I skip this part but have done it and the tummy gets a nice firm workout. The first few days after I was sore. Now the workout is still challenging but much easier for me to keep up. I've lost 10 lbs so far without changing my diet. You should enjoy it.

Best retail video on the market for cardio kickboxing
, April 23, 1999
Reviewer: A viewer from Frisco, Texas

WOW! I love this tape. I usually don't do a review after one workout, but I really enjoyed this. It went by so fast too. This is probably the best retail tape you can find and I am usually not a Kathy Smith fan (although I like her book) at all (Aerobox is the only tape I like and she doesn't lead it). Also surprisingly Keli Roberts, who recently released a kickboxing video, is in the tape with Keli and actual leads a little segment (as well as her co-star Keith Cooke). First there is an instructional section that explains the different kicks and punches, but if you've kickboxed before there are also pointers in windows throughout the video by the Kickbox expert she got, Keith Cooke, who is kinda like a Keanu Reeves looking guy. Then you have a ten minute warm-up/stretch (yes Billy Blanks could take a few lessons here). The warm up does the punches and knees in mini combos with a pretty good stretch. She also includes elbows up over the head which is one of my favorite upper body moves. You then have a 25 minute aerobic section with lots of simple, but fun combos. Keli and Keith each teach a little segment. There are jabs, crosses, elbows, hooks, front kicks, side kicks, roundhouse AND back kicks in various combinations. She also does boxer's weaves and shuffles. Then there is a brief cooldown and onto drills. The drill section utilizes a straight back chair and you do a lunge front kick combo on each side. These are controlled and more for flexibility and strength. Then a back kick. Switch legs and do the same thing. Onto side kicks and round house, and then other side. She then does a pretty thorough stretch utilizing the chair. Now I have only done the tape once but it seems she forgot to stretch one hip flexor, but I could be wrong (like I said only done it once). Then she has a "bonus" five minute segment of back/ab stabilization strengthening. Very much like Abs and More by Keli Roberts and similar to the plank in Power Kicks. Then it's onto your hip and you do these side kick crunch things on each side, and it gets tougher when you extend your arm. The music is pretty good. The set is a boxing ring with the ropes missing, but not dark like in Aerobox or Kick Butt with Kristoff St. John. I think this video is great for beginner through intermediate, advanced would probably need to do more power or tack this onto another tape. For the low-cost this is a great intro to kickboxing or a great addition to any collection IMO.

WOW!!! Just what we were waiting for!!!!, May 9, 2001
Reviewer: A viewer from Apopka, Florida

Words lack the full power to describe the effect of and the feelings portrayed in this video!! One more time, Susan and her team, have produced a technically flawless video that reaches all levels. The instruction technique, which, needless to say, is excellent, coupled to the magnificent scenery of this beautiful Island have created a third video that completes a great series. There have to be more videos in the works, right guys? We are left waiting for more. Keep up the good work.

Rich Grogan: Kick to Get Fit

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This sweat-worthy workout uses cardio kickboxing to condition the heart and target the abs, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Instructor Rich Grogan is certified in both martial arts and fitness. Before the workout, Grogan presents an instructional segment so that you learn proper cardio kickboxing technique and get an introduction to the combinations of jabs, kicks, elbows, and knees that you'll use in the workout. Next is a grueling segment where you work the lower body by practicing kicks from various positions on the floor rather than standing. Now you're ready for the main workout, filled with kickboxing moves that will keep you sweating and your muscles burning. The workout has a feel of a drill: Grogan demonstrates a combination, then you practice it, generally for two sets of eight. Grogan is accompanied by a group of able and hard-working class members. The music is irritating--it's too loud, doesn't match the workout either in flavor or tempo, and Grogan's counting is seldom on the beat of the music. --Joan Price

What a great video, July 2, 2000
Reviewer: Larraina Vincent from Dallas, Tx Usa
Hey ladies if you want a great video that is fun to do and easy to follow, this is it. I am usually not very fond of exercise videos, but due to my limited free time, I have to squeeze my workouts in any way I can. I found this video, Rich Grogan's Kick to Get Fit at a Fitness show in Dallas, Texas. And I want to tell you that this video will give you everything you want. Not only is it a great workout, but Rich Grogan is alot better to look at than Billy Blanks! If your looking for a great workout and a good looking guy to workout to, then take my word, and try this video out.

WOW - This was Fun Workout, October 28, 2000
Reviewer: Mary Laucean from Fairbanks, AK USA
I want to start by saying that I am like most people and I don't think any type of workout is fun, but I realize that I have to work out or I will never reach my fitness goals. I have done a lot of aerobic videos including Tae-Bo and it is usually the same old thing, the person on the video goes a million miles an hour and I can't keep up. So not only am I not getting anything out of the workout, but the pace is SO FAST that I just can't do it. And of course I don't enjoy it, because how can you enjoy something that you can't do! So I tried the Kick to get fit video and I expected the same thing, (especially after seeing the cover, which is this hunk do a high kick) but I thought I would give it a shot. And WOW was I surprised, this guy, Rich Grogan, (the hunk on the cover)really understands fitness and how to make exercising FUN. He walks you through each movement and also shows you several ways to do each movement according to your ability level. The workout starts on the floor and I thought my buns were going to fall off. After that they stand up and this is when the video gets really fun. I can't believe that I am actually saying that exercising is FUN. But this video really is, and watching Rich Grogan punch and kick around helps add to the enjoyment. I give this video 2 thumbs up and 5 stars. Look out Fitness World this guy is for real.

 Denise Austin - Power Kickboxing

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
"If you rest, you rust!" Denise Austin warns, and then she makes sure we neither rest nor rust with this high-intensity, aerobic kickboxing workout. "I want to see those muscles, yeah!" she calls out. "You've got 'em, use 'em!" This video starts with experienced kickboxers demonstrating the moves that will be used. Then it powers into two different, high-energy, 20-minute workouts. Austin calls the first workout "beginning." It's easier than the second, yes, and it may be basic as far as kickboxing goes, but it's anything but wimpy. If you're new to exercise or overweight, the many high-impact moves (lots of jumping rope and jumping jacks) might not be appropriate for you, and no one shows modifications. If the first workout is enough for you, you get a relaxing stretch and can stop the video. If it's not, continue with the "drills" workout (or you can start here once you've mastered the basics--Austin starts with a second warm-up). This segment builds on the moves you've learned, with more challenging combinations. If you're not an Austin fan, you may find her incessant talking annoying. Get past that, and this is great aerobic conditioning, muscle strengthening, and fun besides. --Joan Price

Awesome workout!
, July 28, 2000
Reviewer: A viewer from San Antonio, Texas United States

If you want to burn calories and tone up, this video is for you!

There are two 20 minute workouts and an instructional segment. Even if you are a Tae Bo pro, don't skip the demonstrations! I have been doing Tae-Bo for some time. I thought I knew what I was doing! But Denise's demonstrations taught me a few ways to improve!

The first workout is basic. But you will still burn some calories and tone up. It is easy to follow, no impossibly complicated moves to figure out.

The second workout is awesome! Its pace is faster. You'll do jabs, hooks, side kicks, back kicks, everything you do in Tae Bo. But Denise makes it go by a lot faster. And the drills don't drag on. So you don't get bored or overworked on one area. She also threads the "bob and weave" through the workout. Great for the legs! I have been sore for days now. There is some jumping around though, (mock jumproping and jumping jacks) so if you can't do high impact, I would stick with the basic workout.

Denise is painfully perky. She really likes to motivate, and say things like "burn that butter." (? ) I suppose that this might irritate some. If so, just hit the mute button.

Bottomline, if you want a great workout, or just a change from Tae Bo, buy this video. And if you are weighing this video versus Tae Bo, I recommend this one. Denise provides better instruction, and an overall better workout.

Buy it! You won't be sorry!

A decent workout...

Reviewer: books4mel from Alexandria, VA

I have several Denise Austin tapes and enjoy them all. Her talking doesn't bother me, but it certainly bothers my husband, so I try to work-out before he gets home!

In this Power Kickboxing routine, you're basically getting a Tae-Bo work-out for a third of the going rate. Denise gives instructions on all of the basic moves during the first work-out. I think her kicks are slightly different than Billy Blanks, so be careful when doing the combinations.

The first work-out will definitely increase your heart rate, so you're getting the benefit of a cardio work-out but also learning some kickboxing moves at the same time. I think this one is more intense on the cardio side than the second session. The second session is slightly more advanced with several drills involved. There are also targeted ab exercises, which is a definite plus. I have a small area to exercise in, but I'm able to do both work-outs without knocking any furniture over!

Overall, I think this is a great cardio work-out for people of medium to high levels of skill. It'll be tough at first, but after a week or so, you'll know the exercises by heart. I'd also suggest alternating this tape with an abs video and regular aerobics tapes. The music is not the best by any means, so you may want to mute and/or use the radio instead. Enjoy!
