Reviewer: A reader from LA JOLLA, CA United States

This book is a must for boxer's and coach's alike. I use it as a reference book. It will definitely add to your routine as a coach or student. If there is a more practical book out there on boxing, I haven't seen it. Good job!!

This book gives me plenty of practical drills. I use with my boxing students, referring to it on a regular basis. If there's a better reference book out there, I haven't seen it. Good job!

Boxing the Complete Guide to Training and Fitness, December 26, 2000
Reviewer: unknown from USA

You can't learn boxing from a book, but this would be our favorite. It is easy to understand and allows flexibility. If you just know the basics of boxing, this book is good reference.

For beginners only..., September 18, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from Philadelphia, PA United States

Danna Scott's Boxing is written for beginners. If you are brand new to the sport, it's a great tool to help understand the fundamentals. Otherwise, a more advanced boxing text would be more appropriate

The Science of Boxing : Rules and...

Customer Comments

Great Historical Reading, March 8, 1999
Reviewer: Raymond Miller from Hopwood, PA

What an opportunity to learn boxing from an actual bare-knuckle champion. Donovan's book was endorced by such greats as Bob Fitzsimmons and Peter Jackson, and should be of great interest to any boxing historian. Also, it is a great opportunity to learn boxing skills from someone who actually fought such greats as Jack Dempsey "the Nonpareil", Jem Mace, and John L. Sullivan, just to name a few. Doyle Studio Press has done a great service to the sport of boxing by reprinting this fine work.

Championship Streetfighting : Boxing as a Martial Arts

Book Description
Your fists are your primary weapon system in a streetfight, but most martial arts "masters" like to gloss over that fact. Now fisticuffs expert Ned Beaumont shows you how to duke it out in back alleys and smoky bars and walk away grinning (with all your teeth). All the dirty tricks of boxing are included, too. Not for the faint of heart, this one is destined to become a classic.

A Fantastic Read, March 30, 2000
Reviewer: Logan-James Randall from Canada

Ned Beaumont has written a practical no-nonsense book on how to use boxing as a method of self-defense and exposes the myths surrounding Hollywood fight fantasies. Some other reviewers find his critique of Asian martial arts to be too one sided and there may be some truth to that. However, as one who has studied both TKD and Jujutsu and Boxing I can say that some of the points he makes are valid. Even if boxing is not you're combat art of choice you can still learn a lot from Championship Streetfighting and the author's take no BS attitude is a breath of fresh air in the self defense literature scene.

Excellent Book!, February 27, 2000
Reviewer: Chuck Burbank from New Jersey

Championship Streetfighting is the greatest book on unarmed combat I have ever read! Any practitioners of Asian martial arts who were offended by this book have either not read it thoroughly or have never been in a real fight. I've done both. I've also studied Karate, but I've never used a technique as effective as the ones taught here. These are the techniques of the old time fighters, when boxing was a bloodsport, and they work! Furthermore, Beaumont does not negate the use of martial arts. Instead, he suggests the reader combine boxing with any fighting arts he/she may already have learned. I cannot recommend this book too highly.

The speed bag bible : the ultimate speed...

A how-to book that works!, June 13, 2000
Reviewer: Edward J. Quigley from Lansdale, PA

Alan Kahn was a drummer, as in musician, and he has figured out a way to write speed-bag-hitting techniques in something akin to musical notation -- but infinitely simpler! For example, FCP means "front circle punch." And he lays out the combinations with easy to follow notations like FCP, FSP....and takes the speed bag out of boxing-only applications and puts it into the realm of rhythm eye-hand coordination mastery. And by implication makes it relevant to everything from swinging a golf club to hitting a tennis ball. No, he does not mention these things per se, but the implication is that master the mind and the rhythm and relax and you'll learn the secret of excelling at sports because all sports are played in the head. And working out with the bag is simply great fun. One of the best how-to books I've ever used.

This is the ultimate book for the Speed Bag enthusiast., June 16, 1999
Reviewer: glund99710@aol.com

If you are interested in the benefits and fun of working out on a speed bag, this is the book for you. I had the pleasure of meeting Alan Kahn and observing his skill on a speed bag. If anyone in the world is better at it, I've never seen them. I highly recommend The Speed Bag Bible!

Boxer's Start-Up : A Beginner's Guide to...

Editorial Reviews
This latest entry in the Start-Up Sports series covers boxing, which, the author argues, offers a good aerobic workout, builds physical self-confidence, and promotes self-defense. Equipment suggestions, safety tips, and offensive and defensive skills and strategies are discussed, with sequential photographs lending clarity. The volume finishes with a brief boxing history, as well as a personal diary documenting Werner's supervised boxing lessons and sparring bouts. Although some boxing techniques, drills, and workouts are included, the book is not so much a how-to manual as a general overview of an ancient sport. Includes glossary and a list of helpful resources, though some of the suggestions, like "just type in boxing" when looking for Web sites, are less than helpful. Sue-Ellen Beauregard

A good helpful little book., August 23, 2000
Reviewer: Fintan Branlow from Ireland

I liked this book for a number of reasons. Firstly its written a casual everyday English and so the author comes across like he is talking to us rather than preaching at us. This plain straight talking allows the book to concentrate on what it is supposed to i.e. boxing. The book goes through the various aspects of boxing in a clear and simple manner. The photographs are very clear and offer many different and helpful angles. In a way the book is exactly what it claims to be "a start up guide". It keeps things clear and simple which I found refreshing. So if you're expecting a book that is going to teach you all you need to know about boxing then look elsewhere. I thought that the training diary at the end wasn't really needed and was very repetitive. It details his training progress as he trains on a one to one level with his own private boxing coach in a classy L.A. gym/health club. To be honest with you I thought this was a bit irrelevant and misleading as the majority of people taking up this sport are going to be doing so in the local club where they'll be lucky to get 5 minutes of one to one coaching from the coach. I got the feeling that the author Doug Werner really want's to write his autobiography and mabey in the middle of a sports guide isn't the best place. All in all though is a good little book and I would definitely recommend it it those about to or considering entering the sport of boxing.

Great book for people wanting to learn to box!!, October 31, 1999
Reviewer: Cain Cardiel (txstud45@aol.com) from Levelland, TX

As a football player and power lifter I didn't know much about boxing but wanted to get into it. After reading this book more than twice and getting a full understanding on boxing I feel a lot more confident about my boxing workouts now and of what to use and buy for myself. This is an excellent book for beginners who need a starting point but is great to use as a guide to go back and refresh on skills on defense and offense!
