Sugar Ray Robinson: Pound for Pound

Customer Comments

IN one word "AWESOME", April 9, 2001
Reviewer: Thunda from Oz

Although I haven't purchased this video, I recently hired it from the local video shop. Previous to watching this video I had only heard the name Sugar Ray Robinson. Man what can I say, this video is fantastic. I believe that it has so far been underated in other reviews. Not only do u get 2 see Sugar Ray dishing out some serious damage u get to see all the greats of the times and witness mammoth battles. Any one boxer that can have 112 fights and 1 loss is pretty bloody good. In the end sugar had about 174 wins some thing like 19 loses and 120 or 140 ko's-- most of the loss's coming after the age of 40--

Just a correction-- Ali did say that 'pound for pound' sugar ray was the greatest boxer-- but in true ali fashion he boasted-- 'pound for pound I am the greatest HEAVYWEIGHT ever"

i cannot recommend this film enuf :)

Good bio of the original "Sugar Ray", November 6, 2000
Reviewer: Steve from Ohio United States

This biography has film clips of just about every Sugar Ray Robinson fight available, some extremely rare. These clips of Ray's fights range from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. It also contains brief newsclips of Robinson, usually accepting an award or talking to reporters. Sometimes there are even newsclips of Ray's opponents, like the brief one with Howard Cosell interviewing Carmen Basilo in 1958. Robinson himself is interviewed frequently throughout the video, although he's somewhat hard to understand at times. Most interesting comment is from Muhammad Ali, who freely admits that Robinson was the best boxer who ever lived.

Of Course It's Great--It's Muhammad Ali!, August 7, 2000
Reviewer: Jason Rhodes from Roswell, GA USA

The beauty & grace of Muhammad Ali speaks for itself. Watching these fights, from beginning to end, is incredible. I can watch them again & again, especially the fight against Foreman. What perfection! Now I'm looking for more Ali fights on video. I haven't been successful so far. Any suggestions? E-mail me if you have any info.

The Fabulous Four

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The Fabulous Four chronicles the competition of four great champions: Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. This video is a must for any sports fan, depicting some of the greatest fights of this decade-long struggle: Duran's "hands of stone" pounding Leonard for the welterweight crown in Montreal, the famous "Alley Fight" between Thomas "the Hit Man" Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Leonard's amazing comebacks from retirement to recapture titles from his three opponents.

Great selections and narration, December 28, 2000
Reviewer: Robert Lawrence from Brooklyn, NY USA

I received this video as a Christmas present and ended up watching it straight through three days in a row. It contains outstanding footage of some unbelievable fights. The theme of "The Fabulous Four" is used creatively and is not at all contrived. It's thought-provoking to watch four fighters with very different styles and personalities take each other on at different stages of their careers. If you don't know the histories of all the fights, you will be continually surprised. You will find yourself posing questions like the following: If A can beat B, and B can beat C, why does C beat A? The answer, of course, is that there is no single scale of greatness, and on any given day the right set of skills will triumph over the wrong set. It's all in the matchups -- a lesson for sport and a lesson for life. Terrific.

Great fights, March 22, 2000
Reviewer: A viewer from Canada

Very exciting fights between these four great fighters. The most excitement I got while watching Hagler and Hearns. Even with two contraversial decisions it is still great tape to watch. Excellent boxing show. Buy it.
