Leonard / Hearns Saga

Customer Comments

BOXING AT IT'S BEST, January 7, 2000
Reviewer: A viewer from PHILADELPHIA PA

A must have for any boxing fan.It shows both fights in their entirety. In the exciting first fight leonard is behind in the scorecards after 12 rounds, then rallys to knock hearns down in the 13th and then finishes him off in the 14th.The 2nd fight was also great but was declared a draw even though hearns knocked leonard down twice in the fight.Hearns should have gotten the decision, although if the fight would have been a 15 rounder like the first one, leonard would have knocked him out again because hearns was hanging on in the 12th round while leonard was throwing bombs and nailing hearns with a lot of shots.

The Greatest, April 15, 2001
Reviewer: predator_302 from Canada

This is definatly, by far, the best fight ive ever seen in my whole life, packed with toe to toe action the whole fight. This is a fight everybody will love and for fans of the sweet science and Ali, this is an absolute must have, its more than worth the money. After seeing tons of fights and being a soon to be fighter myself, i know a good fight, and this is a great fight in every sence of the word.

Loved every second of it and if I could Id give it 50 stars.

Broken Noses

Bruce Weber's video of Andy Minsker - a Must See!, September 19, 2000
Reviewer: John D. Jones from Wooster, OH

As a fan of Bruce Weber and someone familiar with his shots of boxer, Andy Minsker, I finally purchased 'Broken Noses'. It is very Bruce Weber for those of you familiar with the photographer. The film shows Andy and follows him around his small Oregon home town as he plays coach and friend to his young group of boxers in training. Bruce shows all sides to Andy's life, even attending a family get together where he interviews different family members about Andy. The film is about a 50/50 mix of black and white and color, and intertwined is a great music score that is also very much Bruce Weber. If my memory serves me correctly, I do beleive that Bruce won some International film awards for this film.

Cool, violent, honest and embarrassing. Good-looking., June 23, 1999
Reviewer: Knut Blomstroem, info@gcd.no (see more about me) from Oslo, Norway
Boxing as aestethics is unquestionably high value entertainment. Broken Noses is violent and graphic, as well as embarrassing and painstakingly honest in this no-holds-barred documentary of prizefighter Andy Minskner. The cool jazz-music of Chet Baker balances the hot tempered rage in the ring, making the experience of Weber's film both appalling and appealing at the same time. You definitely don't have to be a boxing fan to enjoy this (and most fight fans probably won't, because of the undisputable homoeroticism through the lens of Weber, perhaps understood as a weak perception of a hard game), and the bluntness of it's main character who frankly relieves his unhappy childhood with a violent stepfather. This may be Broken Noses' most touching moment.

Boxing's Best: Rocky Marciano

Good fight footage and interesting interviews, December 25, 2000
Reviewer: Peter Kasin from California
Some of the other videos in the Boxing's Best series are flawed by not enough fight footage, too much time spent on uninteresting interviews, and not enough insight into the lives of the subjects. This one, though, is a somewhat different story. Although just under an hour long, you get some good footage of several bouts that led up to, and including, his dramatic knockout of Jersey Joe Walcott to gain the title, some footage of every one of his title defenses, and interviews with family members and others who knew him, who give some insight into his character and personality. This documentary reveals him to have been a truly modest and decent man. In the ring, despite a height and reach disadvantage against most of his opponents, he had a powerful punch in either hand, good boxing skills, and an iron will. He just refused to lose. A fairly good documentary on one of the greatest heavyweights ever. Hopefully a better documentary about him will emerge at some point, but until then, this one is good for its price.

Boxing's Best: Rocky Marciano, October 15, 2000
Reviewer: Frank Cassano from Toronto, Canada
This video is a must for Marciano fans. Included, in addition to highlights of his classic fights, is rare footage of seldom-seen bouts against Harry Matthews, Rex Layne, and Lee Savold. Rocky is also revealed in several interesting interviews, clips, and plenty of photos.

The Super Fight (1969), May 1, 2000
Reviewer: A viewer from England
My father watched this fight back in 69 and has not seen it since, either on tv or video. I'm also an avid boxing fan and would also be appreciative if you are able to provide me with information relating to video footage of this particular fight. In my opinion, there is still no fighter out there that has matched this fighter's brute strength and combined boxing skills. He is, the ultimate ambassador of boxing.

Boxing's Best: Jack Dempsey

An interesting biography, but it could have been better, January 3, 2000
Reviewer: Steve from Midwest USA
As an amateur boxing historian, I love watching old films of legends like Jack Dempsey. For that reason I find the HBO series "Boxing's Best" very interesting to watch, because it has plenty of unique clips of these legends. However, my biggest complaint is that the series does not show enough fight clips. In my opinion, too much time is spent with host Barry Tompkins and his special guests. I'd rather see more of Dempsey's classic bouts than listening to some sportswriter's memories. This is especially true since each episode of "Boxing's Best" only lasts about 55 minutes. However, since videos of Dempsey, Johnson and Louis are almost impossible to find anywhere else, I guess you have to be somewhat grateful to the producers for releasing this series to home video.

Boxing's Best: Joe Louis

IF YOU'RE A JOE LOUIS FAN, YOU'LL LIKE THIS VIDEO., September 5, 2000
Reviewer: A viewer from South Easton, MA United States
This video contains exciting knock-out scenes from many of Joe's memorable fights, and it brings back the thrill of watching the greatest of all heavyweight champions at the peak of his fighting prowess. My only criticisms are, it didn't show enough of the fights that it featured, and it should have featured more of Joe's fights. In other words, I would gladly have paid twice the price for a video that covered Joe Louis' career in greater depth. Nevertheless, it is well worth the money, and it belongs in the video library of every Joe Louis fan.
