Boxing's Greatest Upsets
From the Back Cover
Reigning world middleweight champion, Marvellous Marvin
Hagler, refused to take seriously the challenge by Sugar Ray
Leonard for his world title. Leonard hadn't fought for three
years. He would be out of condition, too slow. Hagler's
confidence proved misplaced when, over twelve gruelling,
viciously fought rounds, Leonard made boxing history and
took his crown. While the boxing world reeled, the greedy
pockets of the book-makers were lined with the millions of
dollars bet, worldwide, on the 'obvious' favourite, Hagler.
Steve Cruz was an utter under-dog when matched against
the British boxing sensation Barry McGuigan, but the
horrendous 100 degree heat of Nevada sapped the strength of
the champion, as did the superlative punching of the
super-conditioned Cruz and McGuigan's title melted away.
Early in the second round of their championship match,
Muhammad Ali experienced the potent punching power of Ken
Norton when Ali's jaw was broken by a crunching cross. With
little hope of a win, the world learned too, just how hard a
man Ali is as, in agony, he fearlessly fought his ferocious
opponet for a further ten rounds.
This unexpected upset is the life essence of this great
sport. Featuring 20 fascinating fights, including the
battles of Barkley and Hearns, Moore and Duran, Ali and
Spinks, sensational shocks and surprises permeate every
minute of this powerful, action-packed programme.
